Today, as in the early days, the senior center is vibrant and active. The seniors of Clairemont have come to count on the center again for their daily activities. The Cathy Hopper Clairemont Friendship Center is dedicated to serving seniors. On any given day you will find groups of seniors socializing in the lobby, playing cards, games and puzzles.
Our multi-purpose room is at capacity with seniors participating in a variety of fitness classes from exercise and line dancing to yoga, all designed to meet their unique needs.
We offer art classes, such as painting, drawing, card making, choir and music appreciation. We even have a computer lab to keep seniors educated about how to use technology. We have special monthly events and health screenings. We pride ourselves in our ability to meet the needs of seniors by providing information about a variety of resources within San Diego County.
The Cathy Hopper Clairemont Friendship Center is the “Jewel of Clairemont.”
Lutheran Social Services of Southern California (LSSSC) is a 501©3 non-profit organization (ID#95-2225798). LSSSC has over 70 years of history providing services to the San Diego community.
In 1975 Cathy Hopper joined a group of community leaders to establish the Clairemont Friendship Senior Center, which opened the following year in a shopping center on Clairemont Drive.
Within a few years the senior center had outgrown its’ space. In the 1980s funds were raised, and in 1988 the Clairemont Friendship Center was constructed at the current location at the North Clairemont Community Park.
In 2006 the center changed its name to LiveWell San Diego. Unfortunately, during 2015 Clairemont’s seniors were left without a senior center when LiveWell closed its’ doors and remained closed for two years.
In 2017, Lutheran Social Services of Southern California recognized the need for the seniors of Clairemont to have a place to call their own and obtained the lease for the senior center from the City of San Diego. In February 2017 LSSSC celebrated the reopening of the Clairemont Friendship Senior Center.
In February, 2018 the facility was renamed the Cathy Hopper Clairemont Friendship Center by the City of San Diego to honor its’ founder Cathy Hopper, and an official sign was erected on Bannock Avenue.
